The client owned and operated from a 1960’s two storey office building which had been constructed using load bearing masonry and concrete floors. They sought to add another storey to this building but the cost and disruption that would have resulted from the necessary structural strengthening works were considerable. W F Brown associates were approached for an alternative approach. We designed a new steel framed building that spanned over the existing building using expressed external columns. This technique allowed the building to effectively remain in operation thought most of the construction period and resulted in the transformation of a rather dull flat roofed building into one with a pitched tiled roof more in keeping with the local style an providing the client with the additional storey within the vaulted roofspace.
